An Compassion of Strangers: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Land the Job That Changed My Life

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a friend. Since my companion was considering starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, sat down, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did for a living, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – close to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The engineering student came up to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she said: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his full name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in so many ways. I didn't possess the bravery or self-assurance to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
