Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the option to question certain calls made by the official, following the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
